Bangladesh was not always the free country it is today. The people reached out and took their freedom from Pakistan in the Bangladesh war of liberation of 1971. The current borders of Bangladesh came about through the partition of Bengal, internal squabbles and political unrest. Unfortunately, immediately after independence, the area went through tough times of famine, poverty, and natural disasters, not forgetting military coups and political turmoil. The restoration of democracy toward the turn of the century, managed to create a calm country, going through rapid expansion, and leading as textile manufacturers.

Several centuries in the past, Bangladesh was known for the largest population of Hinduism and Buddhism. However, with the coming of the Sunni missionaries, Islam started playing a larger role. This is relevant and an amazing mark on their culture, with a lot of remnants of these religions still around to this date. Some of the more prominent ones are the Dhaka landmark, Lalbagh Fort, which was put up during the reign of Aurangzeb. Not forgetting the Ahsan Manzil, which was a palace that the Nawabs of Dhaka stayed at.

Having a lot to offer and show for, it makes sense for people to head on down there and enjoy everything that this beautiful land has to show you. There are two main reasons why any one would want a Bangladeshi passport.

  1. They don’t have a passport but have the right to ask for one
  2. They descend from Bangladeshi parents

This passport is valid for travel in all countries of the world except Israel since there are no diplomatic relations there.

The process of gathering a passport is quite simple. Unlike most passport processes, you have to get an appointment before you begin. Fill the online application form, and submit it to get an appointment. Pay attention to the documents needed, to make sure you have everything. At the appointment, submit all the supporting documentation and provide your biometric details. You would then be informed about the fees, submission time, and when they would deliver it. All you have to do then is sit tight and it will arrive, or they might ask you to collect it, depending on your address.

Creating a Bangladeshi Passport is not the toughest thing you have done

Let’s begin with a lesser known fact about the Bangladeshi passport. It was one of the few countries still issuing hand written passports while the rest of the world moved on, and finally in 2010, the Government exchanged 6.6 million passports with the new machine-read passports. They stated that all traditional passports would be withdrawn by 2015 and replaced by machine read passports, or rendered inactive or unusable.

Bangladeshi passports are printed in both English and Bangla, which is a Bengali language. Since passports have all the identification of users, their personal and family details are usually mentioned on them, along with their travel history and other information.

According to Passport index, a free online interactive tool that rates passports, the 2017 statistic showed Singapore as the first Asian country to top the list, while Germany a close second, followed by Sweden and South Korea in third. On the flipside, India ranked 75, Nepal 89 and Pakistan 93. Bangaladesh on the other hand ranked 90th.

The process of creating a passport is just like any other. After filling out the application form, (downloadable here), applicants have to wait to get a date for their appointment. The forms have to be downloaded, printed and filled in hard copy since there are no provisions for online uploading of passport forms at the moment.

They would then have to provide supporting documentation to match the information provided in their application form. After getting their biometrics information gathered, they would be given about a fortnight to for their passport to be prepared. The fees that have to be paid would have to vary based on the type of passport being applied for. If you are applying for an immediate passport, you have to pay a higher amount to get one sooner. Otherwise, the default amount of BDT 3,450 with does not include VAT. It would either be delivered to them or they might have to come to the office to collect it.

A Bangladeshi passport is valid in every country of the world, except Israel, since there is no political treaty between the two countries.

How to go about getting an India-Bangladeshi passport

All passport processes have their own complications and hiccups. However, if you, as an individual of Bangladeshi nationality, have your documentation in order, you might find the passport creation process that much easier and surprisingly faster.

In case you are working on getting a Bangladeshi passport, you can download the application form here. Make sure you have a registered certificate stating that you are a permanent resident of Tripura or have a citizen registration certificate. More importantly, all applicants have to be older than 15 years. The entire process costs Rs. 500 which has to be done through a bank challan. This cannot be done through any bank and has to be done with a registered bank following their working hours.

As with all public documentation, recent photographs have to be provided. These have to be attested by a gazetted official and match the picture requirements for this purpose, 3.5 cms by 4.5 cms. If you are working for the state, or central government, or a public sector undertaking you need an NOC (No Objection Certificate) from your place of work, stating that they are alright with you continuing the process. The NOC has to be issued within less than two years of going through the entire application process.

To include children’s names in the passport, their birth certificates will have to be provided as well. All details have to be verified at the Bangladeshi passport counter, which means you have to visit the counter after the police verification.

Most of these details are asked for and mentioned on the form when you are filling it out. After the passport is ready, they are usually given out during the second half, 2:30 – 5:30 pm. For more information, you can always get it here.
